Back to the future:
I was 12/13 years old when i attended my first Camp. Coming from Ramogodi North West initially known as Baphuthatswana in the early 70's.
The Preparation
Obviously there was accommodation and transport fees paid in advance. The day before the journey, the following "Mafago Padkos" which will be slaughtered chicken and dumpling or papa as there was no KFC, Wimpy etc. It was a must that you carry food from home as the first meal will be served in the evening on the day of arrival, just like today we had to take our own plates, spoons and mugs. We carried our own blankets and slept in a biege-brown twnt on the floorc(slightly short grass). It was very intresting because we did not know anythinmg better by then.
Teachers and daily routine
The late brother Simon Magagula from Daveyton, Brother Joshua Masango from Soshanguve and others were the teachers who concluded many sermons at that time. We had morning devotions that we had to attend before we got breakfast of soft porridge or jungle oats, boiled eggs and peanut butter. There we also elderly sisters from different congregations who were responsible for the cooking and cleaning of pots. There were no stoves, a fireplace was created on the ground and fire was from wood fetched in the bush by the brothers. I cant recall any outing except that on the eve of departure there will be choral music from different congregations that is all about Oskraal.
